The shot on the left is taken at family housing at Montana State University in Bozeman -- probably spring 2001, so Alex was about 4. I took his training wheels off that day and ran with him around the block, holding his seat from behind, then letting go, then grabbing it again when it looked like he'd fall. After one time around, he had it, though you can see that he's a bit wobbly.
Since I bought Alex his first real mountain bike (I think he was 10 or 11), biking has been his main focus. Over the past year we've stretched ourselves to get him to some competitions in Colorado, Washington, and California. The picture on the right above is from a competition last August in Colorado. Right now, he's at the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, California. Here's a shot of him yesterday:
He entered the pro category, though he could have remained in the amateur division; he's on the cusp. He stepped up a class on his own. I'm impressed, as I think it shows a propensity for pushing himself, and also that he has a long term view of himself in the sport. It also shows that he's a thinking man, all of which makes me proud.
