I like mathematics and where it takes me, from the student-filled classroom, to the far-off and interesting places of both the earth and the mind. I also like the freedom my job allows, giving room for the adventures written about here.

Dave Sumner and I have been friends since our years in Eugene, Oregon (1998-2000). Since then, we've gotten together most years for a backpacking trip in the summer. This year, we opted to get together for some skiing instead. Dave got a cheap Alaska Airline ticket from Portland to Missoula, we skied a marginal day at Snowbowl, and then we had some great skiing up on Little Saint Joe Peak in the Bitterroot. This trip together wasn't as extensive as one of our backpacking trips, but it was great to spend time together and enjoy the beauty of western Montana.
