| Matt with Holland Peak and Buck Peak (closer) in the afternoon after walking the ridge. |
The overnight was excellent, with fantastic and little-visited country and great company in Matt. It's remarkable that such a trip, which took only about 24 hours total, is so close to Missoula.

great trip report - enjoyed it very much, especially since I'm planning on doing this trip with a party of 4 later this month. Wondering whether to take a rope/helmets to be able to short-rope exposed sections as a couple of the party are first timers on ridge scrambling (some gym climbing experience and lots of hiking, but, their first time up high). Any advice appreciated. Thanks
The crux of that ridge is both the north and south ridges of Buck Peak, the north ridge being loose and probably the hardest section. Nonetheless, there is nothing worse than class 3 for entire ridge from Holland Lookout to Holland Peak. If you avoid Buck Peak, you'll make the traverse easier (we walked through the west bowl of Buck on the way to Holland), but there are still a couple of tricky spots.
